Wu Briefs Hill on Malaysian Elections

Apr 8, 2008

Angela C. Wu, International Director of the Becket Fund, briefed Congressional Human Rights Caucus staff members, diplomats, and reporters Tuesday April 8 on the impact of March 2008 elections on rule of law and religious freedom in Malaysia.  The Becket Fund has advised Malaysian human rights lawyers in religious freedom cases.
“The opposition’s upset in March 2008 elections in Malaysia signal increased potential for good governance by constitutional rule of law,” said Ms. Wu. “Religious and ethnic minorities in Malaysia have had their voices heard, but concerns remain in a country with a dual civil and Islamic law system that has repeatedly disfavored non-Muslims and Muslim dissenters.”
