Communications Associate
Hours and Location: This is a full-time position in Becket’s office in Washington DC. No remote applicants will be considered.
The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty is seeking a talented and mission-driven Communications Associate to help tell the stories behind the nation’s important religious liberty cases. The ideal candidate will be an excellent writer, a sharp editor, and a confident communicator who can translate complex legal issues into lucid, compelling prose for broad audiences.
The Communications Associate will work closely with Becket’s attorneys, clients, and communications team to develop messaging and draft copy across Becket’s platforms. This includes press releases, media advisories, statements, social media posts and threads, website copy, case summaries, talking points, opinion pieces, newsletters, and other public-facing materials. The associate should be able to understand the legal and human stakes of a case, identify its strongest themes, and present them accurately, persuasively, and in Becket’s unique voice.
The role also includes significant media-relations responsibilities. The Communications Associate will communicate with reporters, respond to media inquiries, pitch stories and commentary, coordinate interviews with attorneys and clients, manage scheduling and logistics, and help prepare spokespeople for media appearances. The associate will monitor news coverage, identify opportunities for Becket to contribute to public conversations, and maintain strong, professional relationships with members of the press.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Drafting and editing press releases, media advisories, statements, talking points, social media content, website copy, op-eds, newsletters, and other communications materials
- Working with attorneys and clients to develop accurate, accessible, and compelling case messaging
- Translating court filings, opinions, and complex legal arguments into clear language for reporters and the public
- Responding to media inquiries and coordinating interviews, briefings, and other press opportunities
- Pitching Becket cases, attorneys, clients, and commentary to local and national media
- Preparing attorneys and clients for interviews and public appearances
- Managing media scheduling, logistics, follow-up, and internal coordination
- Monitoring news developments and identifying opportunities to advance Becket’s mission
- Maintaining media lists, tracking coverage, and helping evaluate the reach and effectiveness of Becket’s communications
- Supporting broader communications strategy surrounding litigation, public events, and institutional initiatives
The strongest candidates will have excellent writing and editing skills, sound news judgment, close attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple fast-moving projects under deadline. They should be comfortable working with lawyers, clients, and reporters; able to handle sensitive matters with discretion; and committed to accuracy in every public communication.
Candidates must have at least two years of relevant professional experience in communications, journalism, public relations, media, politics, law, or a related field. Exceptional writing ability, professional judgment, intellectual curiosity, a good sense of humor, and a strong commitment to Becket’s mission are essential.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary Range: $60,000-75,000, plus a competitive benefits package including top-tier healthcare fully funded by Becket.
